Škoda introduced two important new models in 2020: their first fully electric SUV, the striking Enyaq iV, and the fourth generation of their bestselling Octavia. Building on recent successful collaboration, Borealis, Škoda and select Tiers worked together to identify and develop innovative, lighter-weight material solutions which deliver on performance and surface aesthetics for both models. Among the multiple Borealis grades used for interior applications in the Enyaq iV and Octavia, two stand out: Daplen™ EE001AI and Daplen™ EE058AI. Both grades are well established at Škoda and are in compliance with stringent VW Group requirements, including lower VOC emissions. And like the other grades in the Daplen™ family, they allow for design freedom and flexibility, lower part weight thanks to low density, and good processability. Another key element in this 2020 collaboration were the services provided by trusted Borealis partner and leading distributor Nexeo Plastics, whose support was essential in ensuring the success of the project.
The Škoda Enyaq iV
The new Škoda Enyaq iV is a giant step forward in the Czech carmaker’s electric mobility strategy: a fully electric vehicle based on the Volkswagen Group’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform, and the first MEB-based VW vehicle to be built outside of Germany, in this case at Škoda’s main plant in Mladá Boleslav. Borealis Daplen™ materials have been used in the door panels, door cladding, centre console, storage and glove boxes, and dashboard trims; the headlamp housing contains Fibremod™. In addition to interior and under-the-bonnet parts, two other exterior applications – the rocker and door panel – have also benefitted from the use of the highly innovative Daplen™ EH340AE, which offers improved scratch resistance, non-stickiness, excellent surface appearance, and long-term UV stability.
Fourth generation Škoda Octavia
The Octavia remains Škoda’s flagship and top-selling vehicle. Longer and wider than previous models, and boasting an enlarged luggage compartment, each new Octavia contains Daplen™ and Fibremod™ glass-fibre PP compound products for a variety of interior, exterior and under-the-bonnet applications: centre console, pillar trims, glove box and lower dashboard parts, front end carrier, pedestrian protection spoiler, and exterior panels. Of special mention are the grades Fibremod™ GD577SF in the front end carrier (replacing polyamide PA6-GF60); and Daplen EG069AI in the interior pillars, which fulfils stringent VW Group emission requirements.
